Try it Thursday: Get High!

Have you ever completed a killer workout that was challenging, made you feel strong, and perhaps you even had a little fun? The high you can get after a great workout is a very real thing can leave you feeling on cloud 9 for hours! The cause of this little buzz? Endorphines!
come on

When your body comes under stress or experiences pain (hello, burpees), neurochemicals called endorphins are produced in the brain’s hypothalamus and pituitary gland, explains J. Kip Matthews, Ph.D, a sport and exercise psychologist. Endorphins, which are structurally similar to the drug morphine, are considered natural painkillers because they activate opioid receptors in the brain that help minimize discomfort, says Matthews. They can also help bring about feelings of euphoria and general well-being. “Endorphins are also involved in natural reward circuits related to activities such as feeding, drinking, sexual activity and maternal behavior,” he says. –dailyburn.com

Recently, in one of my group classes, we were working our way through a killer circuit of 15 different HIIT moves. Each move was performed at high intensity for 40 seconds, followed by 20 seconds of the cardio move of your choosing. It was SOOOOO hard. But we were are whooping, laughing, and groaning together. Half way through many of the kids that were in the waiting room playing jumped in and finished the workout with us. I don’t know what it was, but the energy was amazing, and the kids were having a blast. Instead of yelling out “CARDIO” for each 20 seconds following our drills, Everyone began to yell out “PARTY-O!” and actually started doing wacky moves and dancing to get the heart rate up! Later on that day I saw one of the participants and she said that was the best workout we have ever done and she was still flying high! I totally agreed!endorphines 1

One of the best natural highs I have ever had was right after I nursed my new baby. Back when she was quite small, I would diffuse some lavender, watch some Friends, and nursed her. I was always buzzed and on cloud 9 when she finished! No wonder! This habitude included laughter, lavender, AND, maternal behavior!

Sunshine, jogging stroller runs, being a mom, date nights at home, with such sweet treats and moments. I am always "high" lately!
