Personally my workouts have become a part of my life. My day feels incomplete if I do not get a workout in. However, signing up for an organized race has the ability to keep me on track and push me outside of my comfort zone in new ways. If the thought of committing to a race scares you a bit-don’t worry, you are not alone! Here is some advice to assist you in jumping that first hurdle!
1. Just do it.
There will never be a perfect time to sign up. Training will be challenging, and you will have to create time for it among all of the other priorities in your life. There will be days when this is harder than others. However, you can do it. You will do it. Just sign up.
2. Sign up with friends.
Whether you are doing a Tough Mudder or a community 5K, the victory is always sweeter when you have others to share the experience with. It is also so much easier to train with a buddy-especially on those days when you aren’t feeling it. It is priceless to have a buddy there to spur you on and vise-versa. It’s a beautiful partnership that works! Even if you can’t find a friend or family member to join you, there are some great running groups in your area that I know would love to have you!
3. Set a good example.
Whether it’s for your kids or your co-workers, be the person who steps outside of his or her comfort zone, stays committed, and demonstrates a healthy lifestyle.
4. Don’t sweat it!
Yes you will sweat…and that is the good part! But don’t sweat the small stuff. Who cares if your mile time is slow, or you have to take walking breaks? If you are training for your first tri, swimming could be challenging while biking may be a breeze. So what! Perhaps you are scared of heights for your adventure run, but did you know you can walk around the giant wall if you really need to? And what if you are participating in a walk for a good cause and you need to raise money but hate asking others to donate? Don’t sweat it! Just tell your story, be authentic, and allow the cause to inspire others to give and support you! The small stuff will work itself out. All you need is a positive and willing attitude!

It was amazing! I didn’t walk at all, which was definitely a mind over matter issue. I was worried about the race because I didn’t feel that I trained properly, but I finished under my goal of 2 hours just at 1:57! It was a beautiful race route! Miss you!
5. Commit with your Habitude Fitness Community.
There are so many walkers, runners, marathoners, Rugged Maniacs, cyclist, and triathletes in this community. By signing up and letting the community know about your race you will undoubtedly receive support, encouragement, and advice. I love receiving messages from people when they complete a race or adventure. They send me pictures and notes on how it all went for them and I feel apart of their team. Talk about inspiring!
