Still Drinking Diet Soda?

I would say that I am a pretty nice girl. But, I am also a girl who isn’t afraid to speak the truth when I need to. No beating around the bush… here you go:

Artificial sweeteners have got to go!

If you are on a journey of healthy eating, cutting out these chemicals is a must. I used to consume and buy diet soda in my early days too. I thought that I could cut calories or curb my appetite-boy have I learned a lot since then! After doing some personal research, I learned about some of the possible side effects from consuming these chemicals. That was the catalyst I needed to never consume them again! Look for yourself at the numerous studies out there that conclude artificial sweeteners only exploit our tastes buds for more.

Researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health who examined national patterns in adult diet beverage consumption and calorie intake found that overweight and obese adults who drink diet beverages consume more calories from food than obese or overweight adults who drink regular soda or other sugary beverages. The results are featured in the January 14 issue of the American Journal of Public Health.-jhsph.edu

I have heard it before, and I know I will hear it again: I only have one Diet Coke a day. It is my one vice…I don’t smoke or drink! I have to drink a pop when I have a slice of pizza! Friends, even if you are on the fence about the long-term side effects of diet soda, I encourage you to ditch all sugary drinks; diet or regular! It’s probably no news to you, but the beverage of choice for optimal health and wellness is water.

So-called natural sweeteners are generally safe. But there’s no health advantage to consuming added sugar of any type. And consuming too much added sugar, even natural sweeteners, can lead to health problems such as tooth decay, poor nutrition, weight gain and increased triglycerides.-mayoclinic.com

As a trainer, I believe it is ok to partake in sugar intake as long as it is very mindful and in moderation. If you suffer from a Diet Coke headache while trying to cut back, reach for some tea, coffee, or even a piece of fruit that could supply you with natural sugars. If you are used to over consuming sugar or artificial sweeteners, a piece of fruit will never taste as sweet to your palate as it should.

In conclusion there is a lot of research out there to date, and some of it states that artificial sweeteners are ok. Maybe that will turn out to be the case in the end. But personally, I believe we just don’t know the long-term effects. Take control of you and your future health!

Note: I did not post too much of my personal research as there are some conflicting studies. I believe it is best for each of us to take charge of our health and do a little research around topics we have questions about. After speaking with your trusted professional and friends, as well as doing our homework, we can then make educated decisions for our own well-being. With that said, the information out there can be overwhelming and conflicting. Ideas and facts are constantly changing. Don’t get overwhelmed.   • This is a topic I feel very strongly about. There are all kinds of wonderful natural ways to sweeten things so why go for the Sucralose and Aspartame. I know we can’t always control what is in the food we eat, but when we can, we absolutely should. Thanks for putting this out there for those that may not be aware.
