I am a summer and sunshine kind of girl. I relish the early sunrise and late sunsets. I love being outdoors and am energized by sunshine, warmth, and bodies of water. I can be walking, running, swimming, playing, reading, or enjoying a grilled meal and a glass of wine on a weekend night – here I feel great and in my element. That is not to say I do not value the days getting shorter, the crisp air of autumn, or the leaves changing into the spectacular blasts of reds, yellows, and oranges.
I would love to be more active in the winter learning how to ski and snowboard. (Maybe a how-to on cross country skiing this year?!) There is much to do to stay interested and active as the cooler months settle in, but the winter here in Chicagoland is long. Personally I find it more difficult to eat lean, clean, and green. Being indoors more means I can get itchy and go check what’s in the fridge more than I should. The foods are heavier (though they can still be healthy!), and I am not outside as much; moving less and sitting more. My point is, for me, it’s just more of a challenge to stay focused, disciplined, and energetic towards my wellness goals.
This fall/winter, I am making it a priority not to just go through the motions, but to stay focused and committed. Who cares if it’s hard! I will give my best effort to stay committed to what foods are best for me to feel and perform optimally. I am also going to shake my workouts up; trying new formats, setting personal goals, increasing my education and knowledge to offer better workouts for you, and moving when I feel sluggish, bored, or stagnant. No maintaining, no going through the motions, no just getting through the day.
Maybe some of you do better in the winter with your wellness goals. Cooking at home more, and hanging out at the gym most days. But for the rest of us, winter can be hard. I look forward to assisting in keeping all of you motivated if you will do the same for me!
I encourage you to print this Habitude Pledge, sign it, and hang it somewhere that you can view it daily. Read and re-read it often as a reminder that you will not just go through the motions this winter, but rather you will succeed in setting and achieving new goals; may they be big or small!
